Yesterday while I was on my way to put in my daily time as a burrito slave, my tire blew out on the freeway. I won't tell the story in detail, because that would take too long and you probably don't care. But I will say that my spare tire didn't fit, and everyone I knew was at work and not answering their phones (I'm new to my area and don't know many people yet), so I was left stranded on the side of the freeway in 100+ degree weather under Arizona sun for 2 hours. And you know what? Even in the midst of my extreme frustration at the situation, I was still able to smile and think to myself, "Hey, at least I'm not at Chipotle!"
I had called my GM immediately after pulling over to tell him that I was stranded on the freeway and that I wasn't sure if/when I would make it in to work.
Did he ask if I was okay?
If I needed any help?
Did he express any kind of concern or compassion of any kind?
NO.
All I got in response was a clearly irritated sigh, and "okay...bye."
YOU WOULD THINK that he could have mustered up a bit of compassion, considering the fact that I have covered shifts for people on multiple occasions who just decide not to show up for work and don't even bother to call (this happens regularly at my store). Not only that, but at least I had a legitimate excuse not to show up on time that DIDN'T involve being too hung over to work!
Now, this story is related to another of my major complaints about the hellhole that is my current place of employment (but only for two more weeks, starting today!). While I was stuck on the side of the road yesterday, I got quite thirsty. Normally, when I go anywhere, I carry a water bottle. EXCEPT when I go to work at Chipotle. This is because, during my first week there, my GM approaches me while I'm on my break:
HIM: "I had a feeling that was yours *motioning to my water bottle*. You're not allowed to bring that to work. All employee drinks have to be in a Chipotle cup."
ME: "Oh, sorry...I just like to reuse. It seems wasteful for every employee to have to use a disposable cup every day."
HIM: "Yeah, and that's great! At Chipotle we support sustainability...but corporate doesn't want any drink containers being used that aren't Chipotle cups."
WTF, Chipotle?? Sustainability, my @$$.
So that is why I quit bringing a water bottle to work, which is why I was without water during my little baking-on-the-freeway ordeal yesterday.
Anyway, Chipotle EFFING BLOWS, and I am so happy that I will be going back to work in a non-corporate environment soon, doing what I love.
